On April 8, 2026, Lucidworks put a number on something the MCP ecosystem has been dancing around for six months. They announced their new MCP server and claimed it reduces AI integration timelines by up to 10x and saves enterprises more than $150,000 per integration.
That number did not come from a whitepaper. It came from a vendor pricing their own value proposition. It is what Lucidworks is telling enterprise buyers they can expect when they swap a custom Lucidworks-to-AI integration for a single MCP server endpoint.
If that number is even half right, it is a repricing event for the entire enterprise AI integration budget. And it raises a question that most SaaS announcements conveniently do not answer: what about the forty other data sources in the same enterprise that do not have a vendor to ship an MCP server?
Because Lucidworks can save you $150K on the Lucidworks integration. They cannot save you $150K on the forty Postgres instances, the three SQL Servers, the Oracle financials database, the MySQL cluster behind the CRM, the SQLite file the ops team keeps on a shared drive, or the Snowflake warehouse that your data team built six years ago. Nobody is shipping an MCP server for those. They are, in the language of IT, “internal.”
That is the real integration problem in 2026. And the industry has not priced it yet.
The 10x claim, unpacked
Lucidworks’ claim is not outlandish. It is actually conservative once you look at what an integration used to cost.
The baseline, pre-MCP, for connecting an enterprise data source to an AI assistant looked something like this:
- Four to six weeks of engineering time to build a custom connector.
- Two to four weeks of security review.
- One to two weeks of prompt engineering and tool-definition work so the model could actually call it.
- Ongoing maintenance whenever the underlying system shipped a breaking change.
Loaded cost for that work in a mid-sized US enterprise, according to the Gartner 2025 Integration Labor Benchmark, lands between $140K and $220K per integration. Lucidworks’ $150K number is inside the middle of that range. It is a believable number because it is what the integration actually costs today.
What MCP changes is not the model, or the prompt, or the tool schema. What MCP changes is the coupling between the data system and the agent. Before MCP, every agent that wanted to talk to Lucidworks needed a Lucidworks-shaped tool definition, a Lucidworks-shaped auth flow, and a Lucidworks-shaped error-handling path. After MCP, every agent that speaks MCP can talk to any MCP server, and the server speaks the protocol on behalf of whatever is behind it.
That is the 10x. It is not faster engineering. It is fewer integrations to build in the first place.
What the number actually prices
Read Lucidworks’ announcement carefully and you will notice something. The $150K saving is specifically for enterprises that use Lucidworks and want to connect it to AI agents. It is not a saving on the Lucidworks subscription. It is a saving on the glue code.
That pricing only works because of three Lucidworks-specific things:
- They have a product. The MCP server wraps an existing platform with existing auth, existing query pipelines, and existing relevance models. The MCP surface is thin; the thing behind it is not.
- They have a vendor-side engineering team. Somebody at Lucidworks built and tested and security-reviewed the MCP server once, centrally, so every customer gets the benefit without each customer doing the work.
- They have a customer base large enough to amortize the cost. A vendor building an MCP server spends six-figure engineering dollars up front and recovers it across hundreds of deployments. A single enterprise building an MCP server for its own Postgres instance spends the same dollars and recovers them across one deployment.
Every one of those advantages evaporates when you walk ten feet down the hall and point at the internal Postgres instance that powers the ops dashboard.
The 40-database problem
A typical Fortune 500 runs somewhere between thirty and two hundred production databases. Enterprise Strategy Group’s 2026 data estate survey puts the median at 47. Only a small fraction of those are behind commercial SaaS products that are going to ship their own MCP server.
Let us do the Lucidworks math on them honestly.
If 10% of an enterprise’s databases are behind SaaS vendors that will ship MCP in 2026, that enterprise gets roughly five integrations “for free” at vendor launch pricing. At $150K per integration avoided, that is $750K in integration cost savings. Real money.
The other 90% — the internal Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle, Snowflake, and SQLite instances — are where the bulk of actual business data lives. Those forty databases are the ones that touch payroll, inventory, customer records, support tickets, sales pipeline, marketing attribution, internal metrics, and the long tail of tooling that keeps the business running.
At today’s integration cost, building a custom MCP server for each of those forty databases costs somewhere between $5.6M and $8.8M. That is the sticker price on “we are not going to be left behind on AI agents.”
Nobody has that budget. Which is why, in practice, most enterprises are doing one of two things:
- Picking a small number of databases (three to five) and hand-rolling an MCP server for each, calling it a pilot, and praying the pilot survives its first audit.
- Wiring agents directly to raw SQL over a single service account and hoping nobody notices until after the conference demo.
Both paths end in the same meeting eighteen months from now, where legal is asking why an agent rewrote the customer credit ledger and nobody wants to answer.
The actual unit economics of an internal MCP server
Let us be specific about what building an internal MCP server costs today, if you do it right.
An MCP server that exposes a database as agent-safe tools has to do, at minimum, the following:
- Authenticate the calling agent. Preferably with OAuth 2.1 and dynamic client registration, which shipped in the MCP v2.1 spec earlier this quarter.
- Authorize the call against a role-scoped permission model. The agent’s session has permissions; the tool call must respect them.
- Translate the natural-language-ish tool call into a typed SQL operation.
- Bound the query — row limits, column filtering, no cross-tenant leakage.
- Log the call with enough detail that an auditor can reconstruct what happened six months from now.
- Return the result in the JSON shape the MCP spec requires, with tool annotations marking which operations are destructive.
That is not a weekend project. A senior engineer who has shipped MCP before needs four to six weeks to do it correctly for a single database. A senior engineer who has not shipped MCP before needs twelve. And then every new database repeats most of the work, because auth, authz, logging, and query bounding look slightly different in MySQL vs. Postgres vs. SQL Server.
This is the integration cost that Lucidworks priced at $150K. They priced it for themselves. It applies, untouched, to your internal databases.
The generator pattern
The way out of this math is not to build forty MCP servers. It is to build one thing that generates an MCP server from a database connection string.

Scope a role for the agent and apply it:

The agent now sees typed tools like list_orders, get_customer, and search_orders_by_date, each of which resolves to a bounded SQL statement that can only touch the rows and columns the role allows. The ssn column never leaves the database. Destructive operations are marked with MCP tool annotations so the agent host knows which calls need human approval.
The integration effort, per database, is on the order of an hour. Not a month. Not six weeks. An hour.
The Lucidworks number, rescaled
Go back to the $150K per integration. Apply it to the forty internal databases.
If every one of those forty databases is worth saving $150K on — and they are, because the integration work does not know or care whether the data source is a SaaS product or an internal Postgres — the total addressable saving inside one enterprise is $6M.
That number is larger than the Lucidworks savings by an order of magnitude, because vendors are a small fraction of an enterprise’s data estate. The long tail is where the money actually lives.
The only way to capture it is to stop treating each internal database like a bespoke integration project and start treating the database-to-MCP transformation as a commodity. That is what the generator pattern does. That is what Faucet does.
The industry will get there eventually. Right now, most enterprises are still doing the math Lucidworks did — per vendor, per integration, one at a time — and quietly assuming the internal databases will never be part of the AI agent story. They are wrong about that. The agents are already trying to reach those databases. The question is whether they reach them through a governed, scoped, audited layer, or through a service account and a prayer.
What to do with this
If you are on an enterprise AI team, three concrete things:
- Get the denominator. Count your production databases. Separate them into “vendor will ship MCP” and “we own this.” The second bucket is the one that matters, and it is almost always bigger than the first.
- Pick the first three databases by value, not by ease. The instinct is to start with the friendliest small one. The mistake is that the useful agent integrations are in the messy ones — payroll, orders, support tickets. Solving those first proves the pattern.
- Benchmark the time, honestly. If your team can stand up a scoped, audited, MCP-fronted instance of one of those databases in under an hour with current tooling, you have the unit economics to do all forty. If it takes a month, you do not, and you should be evaluating generator tools like Faucet before you commit to the hand-rolled path.
The Lucidworks announcement is a useful data point because it is the first time a serious enterprise vendor put a dollar figure on an MCP integration. But the number they published is the ceiling for the easy case. The real question is what the floor looks like on the hard case — and the floor is being set right now, by the teams that figure out how to generate rather than build.

The agents are coming for those databases whether you are ready or not. The only choice you have is whether they reach them through a governed layer or an ungoverned one.
